Bundling digital know-how: innogy’s Digital Practice
The energy industry as we know it is transforming, thanks to new technologies and innovations like smart cities, IoT, smart contracts, data analytics and artificial neural networks. At innogy Consulting, we are involved in actively helping to shape this transformation through a wide range of digital projects. And that was the motivation for establishing our Digital Practice in Düsseldorf. Digital Practice is a dedicated unit bringing together digital specialists in digital strategy, UX design, data engineering science and digital marketing. With their expertise, the unit’s specialists support both our internal projects and external clients.
I myself have personal experience of working with our digital experts on a project to develop digital business models for new markets, and I was struck by the depth of their knowledge and experience. To learn more, I sat down with Max Deitmer, our partner for Digital & Data, to talk about how Digital Practice is empowering our clients to establish digital strategies and solutions. During our conversation, he provided me with some exciting insights into ongoing projects and revealed what becoming involved in the Digital Practice team involves.
David: Max, we’ve worked together on numerous digital projects at innogy Consulting. What was the key reason to establish a dedicated digital unit at the beginning of last year?
Max: Technology and digital innovations are transforming markets and industries faster than ever before. To keep up with such transformation, we need to make use of specialised digital expertise, making us agile enough to respond to rapid transformations and the changing needs of our customers. That’s why we brought our “digital natives” together into a unit composed exclusively of specialists in their respective fields, all with an operational focus. Digital Practice rounds off iCon’s range of services and enables us to further exploit the synergies between our Strategy and Management, Operational Excellence, Change and LRN LAB divisions. Thanks to Digital Practice, we can now meet all our customers’ needs, from strategy through to digital solutions.
David: Other consulting firms also offer digital expertise and support for digital transformation. What makes iCon’s consulting approach unique?
Max: We offer professional end-to-end services based on a practical approach for the entire range of a company’s digital needs and throughout its value chain. To achieve this, we develop tailor-made strategies and application-based concepts together with our customers. In addition to classic digital and data-based consulting services, we also provide our customers with practical support in implementing and maintaining platform and software solutions.
David: How does innogy Consulting’s approach create added value for our clients?
Max: We base our solutions on a deep understanding of the needs and aims of our customers and the people they work for. As a trusted partner, we use our experience and knowledge to deliver our internal and external customers with excellent results. Together with our customers, we establish digital business models – from validating problems and presenting prototypes through to assessing scalability. To help guarantee a successful market launch, we can provide them with digital specialists in strategy, UX design, data engineering science and digital marketing.
David: Sounds exciting! Can you tell us about a specific project you've been working on? That’s sure to make your work a little more tangible.
Max: Our New York City “Climate Action Challenge” is a good case in point. Our task was to determine how to replace all vehicles with a combustion engine in New York City. Together with a partner, we sat down and developed a holistic mobility experience bringing smart city technology and electric mobility to every New Yorker. By combining mobility, agile development and global energy expertise, our concept based on hardware, software and digital services succeeded in setting new standards for smart city technology and charging infrastructure for electric mobility. In concrete terms, we installed EV chargers in New York City, designed a customer-oriented app and presented our visionary concept in a virtual reality model of New York. You can find out all about the project in a video we made.
David: Thank you so very much for providing us with such valuable and exciting insights. I know many young professionals and experienced experts would gladly embrace a challenge like that. And that leads on to my last question. What type of personalities do you look for to support your team?
The most important thing is to be yourself and make a difference! We are on the lookout for experts in the fields of data science and engineering, customer and user experience and digital marketing. We support our employees in becoming or remaining experts in their own particular field. At the same time, we also need general management consultants and agile coaches with a passion for digital topics in order to work holistically together with our clients.
